Here's an 1890s family photo in Linville, North Carolina. The Mountain Resort's large houses, churches, and other structures were clad in American chestnut tree shingles. The reason the chestnut shingles are so durable is that they are almost totally insect resistant.

The architect who established this Linville bark clad style was Henry Bacon, the same architect who designed the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, DC
