"As Back To The Landers in the early 1970s, my husband and I bought an old farm in West Virginia. There were chestnut stumps in the woodlot, the ruins of giants. For the first time I encountered what had been, and the history of loss still haunts my understanding of the forest. But I want to be part of the restoration of the American chestnut tree, not just a mourner at its long, sad funeral. I want to know that chestnut trees will grow again in West Virginia, and in all their other rightful places."
