My sister Charlene is the
little sprout on the right.
|When we first emerge from the ground, a single shoot, perhaps with one or two leaves, begins growing. We grow taller at our tip and wider at our base.
Our new leaves sprout from the growing stem. Soon, a bud appears on the stem and becomes a new stem branching off the old one. We grow more buds, and then more stems or branches appear. From the small chestnuts, we mighty American chestnut trees grow.
Our new stem is also changing inside. Some cells will die and form a hollow tube that transports water from the roots to the rest of the tree. Other cells produce a stiff material that gives us our strength.
